Hyundai knocks it out of the park in South Africa

Hyundai has achieved a significant milestone with the sale of its 800000th vehicle.

The South Korean automaker announced this month that it sold 800000th car since the brand launched in our market 25 years ago; the equivalent of 32000 units per year.

“Reaching 800000 vehicles sold is a reflection of how much South Africans love the Hyundai brand,” said Stanley Anderson, CEO of Hyundai Automotive South Africa.

“We entered the market with a clear vision: to offer vehicles that combine quality, reliability and value for money, supported by exceptional aftersales service.  Today’s milestone confirms that this vision resonates strongly with our customers.”

Today, Hyundai is the fourth best-selling brand in the country, often out-selling Ford and only falling behind Toyota, Suzuki, and VW.

While it does not have a local manufacturing presence, the carmaker directly employs over 2,500 individuals and indirectly supports thousands of other jobs at various points in its support network.

The company has 97 dealerships across South Africa, 44 of which are directly owned by Hyundai.

Beyond direct employment, Hyundai has invested R75 million in bursaries for employees and their families.

It has also built 23 community libraries, and provides workplace experience to 183 youth learners annually.

“From humble beginnings as a relatively unknown brand in a market long dominated by established global motoring giants, Hyundai has grown into one of South Africa’s most successful and recognizable automotive brands,” said the automaker.

“The 800000 sales mark, represents both a significant achievement as well as ushering the next phase of Hyundai’s growth in South Africa. Our positive impact in South Africa is far from over,” said Anderson.

“We remain committed to delivering high-quality vehicles and a customer experience that continues to earn the loyalty of motorists across the country.”

What’s next for Hyundai

Hyundai recently confirmed that plans to launch the facelifted Exter crossover in South Africa at the end of the year.

The Exter is built on the same platform as the Grand i10 hatchback, and is positioned as the brand’s most affordable SUV, slotting below the Venue.

Originally introduced in South Africa in 2024, the Exter has proven to be a great success for Hyundai, selling hundreds of units per month.

The facelifted model, which was unveiled in India earlier this month, will bring a number of visual enhancements to both the exterior and the cabin.

This includes a reworked front end, a new set of 15-inch alloy wheels, and new two tone upholstery for the interior.

The infotainment screen has been revamped, and the Indian models have even been shown with sporty additions like aluminium pedals and a flat bottom steering wheel, suggesting that the Exter may receive the N Line treatment when it reaches South Africa.

Since its a facelift, the crossover will retain its 1.2 litre naturally aspirated petrol engine.

This produces 61kW and 114Nm, which can be paired with either a five-speed manual or a five-speed automated manual transmission.
